Our Primary Values

Well-Being & Kindness

That’s what we practice, that’s what we teach, and that’s who we are at our core.  Yoga Unbound is a welcoming, uplifting, & inclusive practice offering students of all ages a healthy lifestyle that extends kindness towards ourselves.

How We Became Unbound

Although strongly rooted in the Iyengar method of yoga, we are not bound to the dogma of any system. We remain open to the truth, and we pledge to teach only those things that we have directly experienced rather than information that we have heard secondhand. This unwavering commitment to embodied truth is our greatest strength because it provides us the agility to continuously refine our teaching methodology so that it is maximally responsive to the needs of our students.

Yoga Unbound celebrates embodied wisdom, a way of knowing that flows from inside-out as opposed to the typical way of knowing that flows from outside-in. We place more value on how something feels on the inside rather than how it appears on the outside. While this orientation runs counter to our social media-driven culture, it is completely refreshing and even antidotal to the pressure that so many people are feeling in the 21st century.

If you teach an individual first to be aware of his physical organism and then to use it as it was meant to be used, you can often change his entire attitude to life and cure his neurotic tendencies.

Our Foundation

Awareness

Awareness is the simple yet elusive act of giving your full attention to the present moment. It is literally ‘coming to one’s senses’ and requires no special aptitude or prior training.

Alignment

Alignment is the positioning & adjusting of forces within the body. By learning to optimize these forces, you can experience a balanced, orderly, and efficient lifestyle.

Breath

Breath is synonymous with life itself but is often cut short by stress or misalignments in our body. By examining our breathing habits we can learn to think clearer, become calmer, and live healthier.

Space

A lack of space in our joints, between our thoughts, or an overbooked schedule leads to a pernicious sense of dis-ease. We work to free space in your mind & body to cultivate freedom & contentment.

Testimonials

  • Geoffrey is a storehouse of deep understanding of yoga and yoga teaching. His genuine quest for self-knowledge through his practice of asana, pranayama, and meditation has enabled him to leap like Hanuman over many of the obstacles that obscure the light of the soul. He can guide you through the physical alignment that leads to ease of breath and quietness of the mind. Study with him and you will be led to the essence of yoga and yourself.

  • Geoffrey has been a student of mine for many years, and in all honesty, of all my students, I would be hard pressed to name a more sincere and dedicated practitioner of the art and science of Hatha Yoga. As a teacher, I’ve watched him grow from a yoga baby to a yoga adult, and the transformation has been impressive. If you are looking for a teacher that can lead you through all aspects of the practice with great skill and compassion, look no further.

  • Geoffrey’s ability to apply yoga movements and concepts specifically to the pupils, in this case, professional basketball players, is astounding. He really took the time to break down individual movements in order to create a routine that would benefit each athlete. In addition, Geoffrey made a concerted effort to make sure that each person knew how to do each pose, why it was important to master, how it was beneficial, and most importantly he focused on the necessity of comfortable progression.

  • My wife and I have been taking private yoga lessons from Geoffrey for the past year and it has changed our lives. His unique teaching style allows each of us to learn at our own pace while maximizing the benefits of the practice. If you want to look better and feel better, give Geoffrey a try — we recommend him unconditionally!

  • I really enjoy practicing at Freret Street Yoga. Geoffrey knows everyone by name. Before long, the friendliness rubs off onto the students and you begin to make friends with the regulars in your classes. By making the practice of yoga very accessible to a variety of students, the knowledgeable teachers at Freret Street are growing the local yoga community in New Orleans.

  • You know how you have one, maybe two, truly great teachers in your life — in any subject — who rearranged and reinspired the way you thought about everything? Geoffrey is one of those teachers. And he keeps getting better, like a great Burgundy.

  • Geoffrey’s style of teaching is so accessible and grounded, playful and inquisitive! I’ve flown across country to attend retreats with Geoffrey, so I welcome the idea of bringing him into my home on-demand and at my convenience. Our trainees hail from all over the country and can’t always practice with our senior teachers so I am sure they will appreciate being able to have a more consistent access to his teachings as well.

  • Geoffrey is a natural teacher. He has deep knowledge and experience, but he is able to communicate in a way that works for students of all levels. He’s approachable, and he makes yoga approachable.

  • “Geoffrey Roniger and his team at Freret Street Yoga are the best yoga and mindfulness instructors I know. (And I’ve lived in a lot of places, including New Delhi.) Recently Geoffrey led a mindfulness and relaxation program as part of a board retreat for a national environmental advocacy institute that I lead. Our group was diverse in many ways, including age, geography, and limberness. Geoffrey worked with our planners to create a tailored program to help us relax and open our minds before we launched into a packed day of meetings, spreadsheets, and slide decks. Geoffrey provided an oasis of calm, compassion, inspiration. He was the hit of the retreat. And I know he helped us make better decisions the rest of that day. He helped us imagine the full potential of our organization and ourselves.”

  • “Geoffrey Roniger has conducted several workplace wellness sessions for the Trepwise team, both in-person and online. We are a fast-paced consulting firm that produces rigorous and actionable solutions for our clients. It is intense, especially during a pandemic, so wellness is really important to me. Let me tell you about Geoffrey.

He has the unique ability to connect with the people in front of him as well as to connect those people to the deeper dimensions within themselves. He uses language that is relatable, encouraging, and insightful, which completely demystifies mindfulness. He welcomes and creates the space for people of all different ages, shapes, and sizes to practice yoga safely and enjoyably.

In this crazy time, we all need to focus on wellness and well-being. If your organization wants that or if you are interested in creating an environment of harmony and receptivity, then look no further. I recommend his work unconditionally.”
